Structure

Temple has a magnificent architecture and its gateway can be easily sited from the Bara Pol of the City Palace which at a distance of 150 meters. It was known that it costs around 1.5 million rupees at that time to build it. The three-storied Jagdish Temple is a marvel of design that includes superbly graven pillars, embellished ceilings, painted walls and plush halls.

The tower of the most temple is around seventy nine feet high that beyond question dominates the skyline of Udaipur. This shikhar (spire) is festooned with sculptures of dancers, elephants, horsemen and musicians making it a sight worthy to lay eyes on. At the welcome gate of the temple there are two huge stone elephants and on the very front of the temple, a stone slab has inscriptions with reference to Maharaja Jagat Singh.

There are 32 marble steps to reach the main shrine. A brass image of Garuda which is actually a figure of half-man and half-eagle is depicting like it is guarding the doorway of Lord Vishnu. The main shrine homes the four-armed image of Lord Vishnu. This idol is graven out of one piece of black stone. One glimpse of the idol experience the bliss of the celestial world.in the calm and serene ambience get one with the divine. The shrine of Lord Jagdish/ Vishnu is centrally situated encircled by four smaller shrines. These shrines are dedicated to Lord Ganesa, Sun God, divinity Hindu deity and Lord Shiva.

There are other artistic architectures which are famous and attractive too. Like a pyramidal spire, mandap (prayer hall) and a porch are best among them. The first and the second story of the temple possess 50 pillars each and all have magnificent carvings which add to temple beauty. The Jagdish temple was also built with Hindu architectural science of “Vastushstra”.Many devotees from far and near come to visit this holy place of worship every year.

History/Story

In 1651, Jagdish temple was built by Maharana Jagat Singh, who ruled Udaipur during 1628-53. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Laxmi Narayan), the preserver of the Universe. After Maharana Jagat Singh built, he asked the lord that how would he believe that he came to stay in his built temple. Then, at the same night he dream that he had been wearing the golden bangles in his hands. And at the same morning, he seen the miracle and had been surprised by seeing the golden bangles in his hands. Therefore, People believes, this temple spiritually pure and real and devotees think that lord Vishnu stays in this temple.

Other Attractions

The annual car festival is held every July coinciding with the rath yatra /car festival of puri Jagannath.The people in Udaipur look forward to this event and are mesmerized by it. An old man had tears in his eyes while explaining the grandeur of car festival and the glory of the lord. The people of Udaipur’s love, affection and adoration are so pure and visible all around the old city of Udaipur.
